Welcome. I started blogging about donuts to coincide with the 2016 presidential inauguration. Initially, I explained my obsession with donuts like this: “they’re delicious, it's silly, and in a world so riddled with serious issues, donuts provide comic, tasty relief.” Over the last few years I have come to realize that a love of donuts is universal and can translate and enable dialogue across cultural, political, economic class, and gender lines. I haven’t met a cab or LYFT driver who was not willing to engage in a discussion about donuts—which gradually evolved into other topics. So, with that, I’d like your help. Please share your donut experiences with me (at wendonutopia@gmail.com) and while you’re munching on donuts, use that experience as an opportunity to listen to others' points of view. It works.

When in Houston on a Cubs Road Trip (via New Orleans!), we had to stop at as many donut emporiums as we could.  Let it be said that Houston is very spread out and it took us 90 minutes to visit three, but it was well worth the trek.  At Hugs & Donuts xoxo (gotta love the name and the décor), the donuts and iced coffee were deliciously wonderful but the service—not so much so. Usually, when I disclose to the server that I have a donut blog, that admission is met with giggles and very excellent service.  Ironically, at Hugs & Donuts that was not the case.  So sorry, Hugs & Donuts, that diminishes your rating to only 2 donuts. Better luck next time.

Next stop was River Oaks Donuts. Pretty far afield and in what seemed like a relatively new, very affluent area. And it showed—in a very positive way.  River Oaks’ marketing shtick was all about their royal donuts—and royal they were.  First of all, they had a large selection of lovely donut holes—in many flavors and some were quite intricately decorated.  But, there was more.  They had a stack of paper tiaras you could wear. I did so immediately!  Then, after hearing that I had a donut blog, they presented me with a Texas-sized donut to go.  Wow.  Now that’s old-fashioned Texas hospitality!  I’d got back to River Oaks Donut in a royal flash (as opposed to flush).

Our final stop was at Glazed the Donut Café—where exquisitely decorated donuts of all varieties are the order of the day and night (24 hours).  The friendly server informed us they are located close to several medical centers so they are truly busy around the clock. These donuts are made to order—we requested a dozen for the folks at the front desk of the hotel (always a fan favorite) and they were greeted with great gratitude.  At this point in our donut safari, we could not handle another bite so the rating is based on appearance, variety, and friendliness—but not taste. Based on other write-ups, we are confident they merit the rating in the taste department as well.

They actually keep the donut samples locked under glass and make all orders fresh!

Sometimes, you need to go back to a donutterie—either because it is just too scrumptious to miss or because you want to check out whether the vibe is different in another location.  In June, 2017, we visited Sugar Shack in Arlington, VA, and reveled in the décor and delightful flavors. In May, 2019, I was in Washington DC and needed to satisfy a donut craving—so headed out to a more urban Sugar Shack with two (relatively) new donut-loving friends. The décor was still delightful (but slightly different from the original Sugar Shack) but we availed ourselves of new flavors and found the visit absolutely splendid.
