Welcome. I started blogging about donuts to coincide with the 2016 presidential inauguration. Initially, I explained my obsession with donuts like this: “they’re delicious, it's silly, and in a world so riddled with serious issues, donuts provide comic, tasty relief.” Over the last few years I have come to realize that a love of donuts is universal and can translate and enable dialogue across cultural, political, economic class, and gender lines. I haven’t met a cab or LYFT driver who was not willing to engage in a discussion about donuts—which gradually evolved into other topics. So, with that, I’d like your help. Please share your donut experiences with me (at wendonutopia@gmail.com) and while you’re munching on donuts, use that experience as an opportunity to listen to others' points of view. It works.

Montana, Idaho, Washington - July, 2019

Veera Donuts
Address: 617 S Higgins Ave #2, Missoula, MT 59802

We ferret out donuts however and wherever we can.  We had read about Veera Donuts (presumably delicious vegan options) and actually found them in two spots in Missoula—first at the the Missoula Clarkfork Market at South Pattee Street on Saturday morning and then, mini donuts—that same evening-- at nephew Chase’s wedding. They were beautiful to look at and tasty—but not on a par with other vegan donuts we have tasted (specifically in Brooklyn at Dun-Well Donuts).

Glazed and Confused

Rating:  zero donuts!

On a spectacular drive from Missoula, Montana to Walla Walla, Washington, we made a special stop in Wallace, Idaho to check out Glazed and Confused donuts.  These were sold from a truck and while the setting (with a gorgeous mountain backdrop) was breath-taking and the service was pleasant, the donuts were not worth the calories. They were stale and not tasty.  Oh well. You can’t win all the time.

Hello Sugar

After lunch in Spokane, Washington, we ventured out to Hello Sugar.  There are two locations—one in town and one farther afield.  Unfortunately, we went at least 30 minutes out of our way to the location farther afield.  Familiar concept—mini donuts and you choose the toppings.  Their marketing is fresh and edgy and the donuts are cute—but not my favorite type of donut.  Though, I must say that the cinnamon mini donut (served warm) was quite tasty. If you’re part of the mini (“choose the toppings”) craze, then Hello Sugar is certainly for you.

Popular Donuts

Address: 706 W Alder St, Walla Walla, WA 99362

Rating:  (maybe even 5!)

In downtown Walla Walla, land of wineries, gourmet restaurants, and a huge state prison, we found Popular Donuts (open 4:00 am to 5:00 pm most days).  Popular Donuts is quite unassuming—none of the frills from the fancy donut emporiums, but great taste! We understand why they are popular—probably the absolutely best chocolate glazed old fashioned (yes, surpassing past favorites) ever!  Even Wayne (who is my faithful photographer, technology supporter, and driver but never donut taster) sampled the warm chocolate glazed old fashioned and admitted it was delicious. Too bad Popular Donuts is not closer to home, as we would definitely go back!

Tonalli's Doughnuts and Cream
Web Site: none
Address: 12321 NE Fourth Plain Blvd, Vancouver, WA 98682

Rating:

The sign out front reads: Tonalli’s Donut Plus Ice Cream!

Other than their identity/branding issues(the sign on the outside is different from the sign on the inside which is different still from the name used on the internet), Tonalli’s is your regular strip mall donut plus.  There are a plethora of traditional flavors to choose among—including old fashioned with several types of glazes.  The donuts are dependable.  Good, but nothing special. And the clientele is decidedly all-American (whatever that means). They are technically in Vancouver, Washington—but rather far afield from the downtown area.

Donut Nook

Donut Nook is a traditional donut shop—but more of a destination-type stop than many we have visited.   When we were there,  at least a dozen other folks must have been there as well—just hanging out, enjoying each other’s company and chomping down donuts.  While traditional, this place has attitude.  The owners invited me into the kitchen where I saw the largest MixMaster known to man (or at least it seemed that way). The owner gave us a free apple fritter “you have to taste this!” and was very agreeable to my photo request (not typically the case).  I would go out of my way to go back to Donut Nook—just for the ambience.  What a trip!

Dot Donuts
Address: 1825 SE 164th Ave #103, Vancouver, WA 98683

Dot Donuts is the freshly-scrubbed, new age type of donut shop.  There was lots of swag (of which we partook—love the shirt, wish it were a softer cotton) and there were many fancy types of donuts with a very limited inventory of old-fashioned (perhaps one left)?  They, too, are in a mall—but a full-fledged, fancy mall as opposed to a strip mall.  Their marketing is top notch and their donuts are good—just not my favored type.

Donut Express

When at a farmers’ market, always sample the donuts.  The donut bakers are generally eager and kind.  The donuts are warm and reasonably priced.  That was certainly the case with Donut Express donut at the Vancouver, Washington Saturday Market.   The mini cinnamon sugar dusted donut was tasty and the perfect way to start a Saturday morning.

We met a friend at Treat’s in downtown Vancouver.  They do donuts on weekend mornings and ice cream in the evening.  Those chocolate and/or fruit filled donuts were delish!  No place to sit but outside on the bench but still absolutely worth a visit.
